6 Yoga Exercises to Control Hypertension

Hypertension and Yoga Postures

High blood pressure increases the chances for getting heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. If the hypertension is not controlled, there is a chance for developing stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney failure. The high blood pressure is also known as the 'silent killer'.

Stress, high sodium diet, overweight and obesity, smoking can be the reasons for developing high blood pressure. Age and family history also can be the reasons for this. To control hypertension, we have to change our diet habit and life style. Proper diet, exercises and stress management can help a lot to control or cure of hypertension. We cannot control our age and genetics, but we can change our diet, we can do exercises and we can find other practical ways to avoid stress. These changes can manage our blood pressure to a healthier level.

Exercises can do a great help in reducing or controlling many diseases and high blood pressure also can be regulated by doing regular exercises. Practicing yoga as an exercise is one of the best option; because yoga is very different from other physical fitness exercises.

Yoga exercise or each yoga pause is known as asana in Sanskrit. Yoga practice should be done with the help of a trainer or with the help of a training video to get better results. Anybody can practice yoga with the help of a good book with necessary instructions and illustrations. Many yoga exercises are recommended by the experts for the cure or control of hypertension; some of them are listed below.

  1. Alternate Breathing Technique (Anuloma Viloma): Inhale through one nostril, retain the breath for some seconds and exhale through the other nostril.
  2. The Dead Body Pose (Savasana): In Sanskrit, 'sava' means a dead body.  Preferably this asana is performing in the end of a yoga session. But doing this 'asana' more times in between different yoga exercises will do great help to control hypertension.
These two yoga exercises have great effect for reducing and control hypertension. Some other exercises are also recommended to practice along with the above two and they are:



  1. Easy Pose (Sukhasana): Sukhasana is a very common pose for practicing meditation and breathing exercises.  Many people automatically practice this pose as children, but lose the ability to do over time due to sitting in chairs. Sukhasana is intended to be comfortable and calming.
  2. Half Spinal Twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana): Twisting poses provide multitude of benefits for the entire body. Twists increase flexibility in the spine, calm the mind, relax the nervous system, improve digestion, and cleanse the internal organs.
  3. Wind Relieving Pose (Pavanamukthasana): This is a wind releasing posture. This is an effective exercise to cure constipation and digestive disorders. It cures indigestion and promotes digestive function. In this exercise abdominal region is exercised very well and all the abdominal diseases are cured. It cures gastric trouble and also those suffering from piles get relief. 
  4. The Cat Pose (Bidalasana): This asana is way to do the warm up also. It stretches back and abdominal muscles and helps to coordinate your movement and breath. This posture reduces tension from neck and shoulders and reduces backaches.  It also provides massage to the kidneys.
Yoga is a complete exercise which is helpful for the development our body and mind alike. Benefits of yoga include the healing of many diseases such as diabetes, rheumatism, heart disorders, blood pressure, migraine etc. Many disorders or inconveniences of our body can be reversed or minimized by the regular practice of yoga. Alternate treatments and herbal supplements are also available and preferred by many to control or reduce 
hypertension.
